Gnocchi, garden whimsy, and a chick named Coco. ๐ŸŒˆ

Hi Reader,

I have been absolutely living in the kitchen the last few weeks developing recipes for both Wholefully and Gentle Kitchen (my energy-aware cooking Substack that went kinda viral last week thanks to a silly note I made about removable bra cups ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ).

From My Kitchen

Gnocchi on repeat: We've been making this 15-minute, one skillet Pesto and White Bean Gnocchi weekly for the past two months. It really does just take 15 minutes and one pot. It's so easy, and so packed with flavor! I just ran out of our pesto we stocked the freezer with last summer, but store bought pesto works perfectly.

Chick update: Remember the fluffy babies from a couple weeks ago? They're already doubling in size and starting to get their real feathers in (that awkward teenage chicken phase is no joke). This is Coco, and she's definitely one of the snuggliest of the flock. It feels so good to have chickens back in our life.

Whimsy for days: This week, we added some very cute and whimsical rainbow flower-shaped raised beds to our garden to hold strawberry plants, and they bring me SO MUCH JOY. I cannot wait to do all kinds of creating with the strawberries we harvest. We already have plans for a huge batch of strawberry wine!

  • ๐Ÿ“ฌ From the mailbag: Aaron asks what Instant Pot I use for fermenting my homemade yogurt,"Just curious which IP you have and what did you do to keep it at the correct temp for the whole fermentation?" A: I did my yogurt-making in an Instant Pot Duo for years, and I highly recommend it! Just make sure to look for one with a "Yogurt" button for easiest fermenting for beginners.
  • ๐Ÿฅฉ You should try this: My Meater bluetooth meat thermometer has been one of the best additions to my kitchen the last few years. I literally get notifications to my watch when meat is done on the grill, in the smoker, or in the oven! Game. Changer. This would be a great Mother's Day or Father's Day gift for the pitmaster in your life.
  • ๐Ÿ† This week's win: I managed to stay within my grocery budget this week, which seems like a dang miracle these days! Please clap for me.
  • โ“ Question for you: What's the meal that always stumps you? (Breakfast? Packed lunches? Sunday dinner?) Reply back to this email for help!

That's the view from my kitchen this week! Hope yours has been full of good food and at least one small thing worth celebrating.

P.S. Quick reminder in case it's helpful: you can update your subscriber preferences at any time to pick which emails will be most helpful to you. You're in control, friend.

Hi Reader, Between the garden, the woods, and our local orchard, this has been one of those weeks where every surface in my house has something fermenting, canning, or cooling on it. Let's catch up. From My Kitchen Bubbling away on in The Fermentation Station. ๐Ÿซ™ I finally pulled my fermenting gear back out this week, and I forgot how much I love the whole process. It's equal parts science experiment and kitchen witchcraft. As far as veggie ferments go, I've got salsa, dill pickles, and garlic...

Hi Reader, It's been a minute since I checked in. I hope you'll forgive me because May was a lot. Like, a lot a lot. We packed in a road trip to Vermont, the Indy 500, the last day of school, and some serious garden workโ€”and then my body promptly sent me the bill. I've been in a major chronic illness flare and boyyyy have I spent a lot of time horizontal, which has given me plenty of time to catch up on TV and reread my favorite books. Here's what the last few weeks actually looked like:...

Hi Reader, Can I be honest with you for a second? Life has been a lot lately. The kind of a lot where standing over a hot stove for an hour sounds like an actual punishment. Thank goodness it is grill season. Throw it on, walk away (especially if you have a Bluetooth meat thermometer), come back to dinner. No mountain of dishes. No sweating in a hot kitchen. Just food that tastes like summer and a sink that's basically empty. This week's entire menu is grill-friendly (either outdoor or use an...
